When I first moved to Tucson, Arizona from the Midwest over a decade ago, the last thing I thought I would find was a love of farming. Growing up, my grandfather had a garden like you wouldn’t believe--lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, blueberry bushes, a pear tree, a five-way apple tree--anything you could want. Early on, I learned that food grown in the family tastes best, and I wanted to pass that on to my kids someday. But how would that translate to a city in the desert?
Of course, I never let a little thing like weather or environment stop me before! With a lot of determination and a little help from the family, I started growing some plants… Which became a garden… Which became a full-fledged farm! Nowadays, our homestead includes two kids, a dog, chickens, several solar panels, and a fruit and vegetable garden beyond our wildest expectations.
Urban farming has become one of my biggest passions, and I want to share with you how I made it happen. Recipes, crafts, and thoughts on life on an urban farm are all fair game, too. There’s really nothing like biting into a strawberry you can remember planting, or watching your five year-old name and feed her chickens, the same thing that my grandfather knew way back when he had his garden. I’m so lucky to live on this itty bitty farm--and you could be, too.
